We had a coffee date at 10am in Westport with a woman I have corresponded with since about 1991 as we are both interested in genealogy and have a common great grandfather. I have never met her despite these years of sharing family history information. That was a pleasant hour, but then it was on the road again down to Cape Foulwind and the seal colony. There were lots of NZ fur seals but they were quite some distance away .... I'm sure we'll see more later.
The next stop was Punakaiki Pancake Rocks. We were lucky to arrive at high tide so the blowhole was working well. Now Tarun can understand why I laughed when he said the sea at Mt Maunganui was rough!
As usual he was keen to walk so I dropped him off at one end of a track,.
While Tarun walked I had a coffee and a read and then was to pick him up at the other end a couple of hours later. Unfortunately I arrived a bit early and sat in the car waiting with the lights on. Flat battery!! This may not of been so bad if we had been on a road but the car was in a car park in some private land where there was no cell phone coverage.... Well and truly in the sticks. Tarun started walking down the 'road' with my AA in hand until he got enough coverage to ring the AA. It wasn't all that easy to explain where we were so the arrangement was that he would walk to the main road and wait for them . After about an hour of waiting I finally set eyes on another human being who was making his way to his car after a three day tramp. He had jumper leads!!!! Unfortunately the poor guy had also had his car broken into so I was lucky the thieves hadn't stolen those. There was still going to be a long wait for the AA so we were lucky to be on our way to Hokitika earlier than otherwise. What a wonderful drive along the coast.
It was a day of waiting!! What appeared to be the best restaurant in town was very busy and they told us there would be a considerable wait. It turned out to be a very long wait as they'd forgotten us completely. Wouldn't have been so bad but the food really wasn't worth waiting for.
Another nice day for us Easter Monday. We headed up to the top of Lake Kaniere where I dropped Tarun off for the start of his walk back along the other side of the lake.
I headed back into Holitika and had a look round the shops, had coffee and stopped off at the supermarket to get some lunch.
We picnicked by the side of the lake, and while we ate chicken the sand flies ate us. Of course Tarun swam again.
We then headed towards the Hokitika Gorge which was beautiful. There was a little bit of rain for a few minutes which just served to freshen everything up. The turquoise colour was amazing .
Back to Hokitika for a rest and then a walk round town.
