It was an early start for Ainsley, Ben, Tarun and I as we were off up north to Opononi. We went in Ainsley's car and as her insurance doesn't cover him, Tarun was a passenger...a bit of a change for him. We will get him driving in a couple of days and it will be his first time driving an automatic car. He has described it as like a dishwasher car ... not sure exactly what his logic is, but I think it has something to do with the fact that you have to do nothing!
A stop at Waipu for morning tea where we introduced Tarun to the good old NZ cheese scone ...what a pity that it wasn't one of the best we can produce. On the 'to do' list ...make him some good scones! another stop at KawaKawa to see the famous Hundertwasser toilets.
Then on to Moerewa for a picnic lunch. Moerewa you ask! Well it was time for lunch and there was a playground for Ben. There couldn't be many other reasons why anyone would want to stop at Moerewa. Ben is loving having Tarun here and I think when he eventually goes home it will be a very sad day for Ben.
We arrived at Opononi just before 2pm ... much later than I anticipated but then travelling in NZ always takes longer than anticipated.
Coming into Opononi was stunning. The sky was bright blue, the tide was in and the contrasting colors of the sky, the sea and the sand dunes was amazing.

We pitched tent in a grassy campground opposite the sea, alongside a few camper-vans and a few goats. It was quiet, beautiful and lovely.
Camp set up and then it was time for a swim ...after all that is why Tarun came to NZ ...to swim! We didn't tell him about the abundance of sharks in the Hokianga Harbour, but then he never bothered telling me about the snakes in India either...fair is fair!
It was a quiet night in Opononi ...even the takeaway food shop closed at 7 pm. On the plus side, the sky was clear and the stars were very clear and visible.
