A quick pack up and then on the road again ...destination the Waipoua Forest to take a look at Tane Mahuta (Lord of the Forest), which to those of you outside of NZ is our biggest tree...a Kauri. Many years ago you could walk right up to the trunk and you definitely got a much bigger idea of it's size, but it now has to be viewed from a fenced off platform. Nevertheless, a girth of almost 14 metres is quite impressive.
I had heard a lot about the Kai Iwi Lakes so despite the fact that we were hungry, thought it worth the short detour to get there. I was right...they are beautiful and quite unique. This may have been my first visit but I doubt if it will be my last. These fresh water lakes were quite shallow so very warm. Again Tarun indulged in one of his favourite activities ...swimming.
The roads are quiet up this way, but that also means that there can be a scarcity of eating places so it was a long drive before we found somewhere for breakfast .. or more accurately brunch at that time of the day. Food choices in Dargaville weren't great but good enough to get us back to Auckland via the Puhoi Cheese Factory for ice cream.
